We could go into all sort of depth and technical specifications here, talking about the diffrent between open, closed and sealed headphones, drilling down into the pros and cons of circumaural vs. supra-aural headphones, and debating whether sometimes a 20-20,000 Hz audio range is better than a 10-30,000 Hz… but all that would probably bore you and go over the head(no pun intend) of the average user. Instead we’ll stick to a couple simple rules and tenats to look for when shopping for a set of DJ Headphones
When looking for good DJ headphones you should be looking for a number of things-
- Comfortable – Most of us are going to rocking our DH headphones for 2-3 hours at a time if not more… you better be damn sure that they feel good otherwise you’ll hate having to put them on
- Closed – I’m going to go ahead and put it out there, closed ear phones are simply better than the open ones… they allow you to focus on the music that’s being cued up with out being distracted by outside sounds. If you need to beat match if you’re mixing, you can always slide one muff off to listen to the beat you’re matching to.
- Sturdy construction – Avoid the cheap frail brands that have bad feedback on the major shopping sites. Yes you might save a couple dollars in the short run, but when you’re buying 2-3 DJ Headsets a year you’re going to be pissed you didn’t just invest in the quality brand with a good reputation
- Sound range – 20-2000hz at the minimum
